This video shows researchers flying a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) across the seafloor during a monitoring survey at Beagle Marine Park between Victoria and Tasmania.
They are operating the ROV and collecting and managing data in accordance with a best practice field manual developed by the Australian Government's National Environmental Science Program.
Ocean best practices are crucial to collaboration, efficiency, and data reliability in marine research and management. The hub has developed a suite of best practices to ensure that marine data collected at different times and places across Australia are comparable.
These field manuals are endorsed by researchers, managers, and technicians from multiple agencies with a variety of experience and subject-matter expertise. Since Version 1 was released in 2018 there has been strong uptake across diverse sectors including applied science, offshore industry, and academic research.
Three new best-practices were added in 2024. They cover microplastics, the benthic observation survey system and knowledge, attitude and practice.
