Overview
This film is part of a series of training materials supporting Ranger-led seagrass monitoring in northern Australia. Filmed with Traditional Owners and Girringun Rangers, this video shows how to carry out drone-based seagrass surveys.
The Rangers demonstrate the full survey process:
Before the survey:
- Equipment checklist and charging gear the day before
- Uploading flight plans and inspecting the drone for damage
- Checking CASA regulations, restricted airspace, and permit requirements
During the survey:
- Launching the drone with a pilot and spotter maintaining visual contact
- Capturing orthomosaic imagery to map seagrass extent
- Monitoring battery level and swapping batteries as needed
- Using low-altitude spot checks to confirm seagrass presence, density and species within the meadow
After the survey:
- Safely landing the drone
- Cleaning and packing away the drone, controller and equipment
- Downloading and reviewing footage back at the office
