Australia’s national protected places include the National Reserve System, Australian Marine Parks, and World Heritage Areas.

The National Environmental Science Program (NESP) Protected Places Initiative (PPI) is working across the four NESP research hubs to strengthen the conservation and sustainable use of Australia’s national protected places.

The PPI, led by the Marine and Coastal Hub, is identifying NESP products that focus on protected places, consulting with project teams and stakeholders, and evaluating their contributions to three core outcomes:

Through a structured process of project auditing, consultation and impact evaluation, the initiative will provide a clear picture of how NESP science supports protected places and informs national policy, management and communication efforts.

The four NESP research hubs are the Climate Systems Hub, the Marine and Coastal Hub, the Resilient Landscapes Hub and the Sustainable Communities and Waste Hub.
