Northern Australia comprises 40% of Australia’s land. It has potential to become an economic powerhouse. There is good reason to believe this achievable. It’s well-placed with overseas trading partners nearby.

Economic developments need to be well thought out, ensuring we understand:

  • environmental
  • cultural
  • community values.

First Nations people have a longstanding relationship with the land. Their viewpoints are of special importance as they have rights to more than 78% of the region.

Researchers have analysed planning activities in the Douglas-Daly and Gilbert River catchments.

As part of Project 3.1, they have looked at what comprises good planning outcomes, and what is problematic. They have also identified knowledge and capacity shortfalls that impede best-practice planning. Other hub projects are also helping support successful planning for the region. These include:
